Diabetes-a cause for vision loss

WHO's advice on vision loss awareness:

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised India and other countries to concentrate on creating awareness about diabetes, being a major cause for vision loss.
On the whole, we can see a high increase of diabetic patients nowadays. Due to the reasons like genetic problems, obesity, changing food habits and high blood pressure, people get diabetes at the age of 25 itself, instead of 40.Though there are many vulnerabilities due to diabetes, the mostly widely seen problem is vision loss and postpartum diabetes. Therefore, WHO has advised most of the countries including Infldia to create awareness on these issues.
According to the statement of Head,Diabetic department of GH, Chennai: Diabetes affects kidney, heart and nervous system, thereby resulting in leg sores. But yet people are not aware of vision loss and death during deliveries. About 30 % of the diabetic patients have the risk of getting vision loss. The worst thing in this is, only after 90% of the retinal damage, people experience a vision being blurred leading to loss of sight.

Therefore, diabetic patients need a heath check up yearly once.Pregnant women should control their glucose levels throughput the pregnancy period,as the glucose levels tend to become normal after delivery. In worst cases, women would continue to have diabetes even after delivery.

When diabetes is diagnosed in pregnant woman, it should be treated at the early stage with great care, as there is a risk of being transferred to the new born too, resulting in genetic disorders.

Therefore the government should take steps to control death rate in deliveries due to diabetes. Primary healthcare centres and government hospitals should be uplifted for the welfare of the society.
