Zero liquid discharge:
The Vedanta group, Sterlite copper which was started in the year1996, has been looked up as a threat to the community right from its startup.
But the company assures a pollution free zone, in and around Tuticorin district. It comes forward with the following statements about zero liquid discharge from its operational plants.
- Right from the startup in the year 1996, there was no liquid discharge from the Sterlite copper factory.
- The water used in the operations is being recycled and used again for the further operations in the business unit.
- The solid wastes are being safely collected in a leak proof containers in according to the standards of pollution control board.
- Therefore, there is no chance of underground water being polluted, which has been been proved by various research.
- By-products like copper slag and gypsum are being used in road and building constructions.
- Gulf of Mannar has not been announced as a sea park by Environmental protection Act and Wild life protection Act.
- Tuticorin is ranked 23rd among 32 districts in underground water pollution.
