Sterlite's sulphur leakage:
The Tamilnadu Government has ordered the closure of the copper unit of Vedanta Sterlite, following the protests and violence in Tuticorin, in which 14 people were killed.
Following the directive of Tamilnadu pollution control Board, the Government has taken such an initiative to protect the environment and interests of the area people.
After the long run violence has come to an end, it has been notified to the Collector, Sandeep Nandhuri about the sulphuric acid leakage in copper smelter unit in sterlite factory. The collector dispatched Government officials to check out the leakage and came out with the information that it is a minor leakage and nothing to panic.
Meanwhile, the Sterlite corporation has requested the Government for a minimum manpower access and minimum power supply to carry out mandatory safe audits and ensure that there are no hazardous chemicals inside the copper smelter. But the permission is yet to be given.
However, the Collector told that they have been ordered only for the closure of the sterlite unit and they cannot allow Sterlite to carry out audits unless they receive orders from the Tamilnadu Government.
